According to the practice, the bedroom’s arrangement, colors, and elements play a large role in promoting harmonious energy flow. This is said to influence the quality of our sleep, relationships, and overall vitality.

Sleep is a complex physiological process that involves the restoration of bodily functions, arranging memories, and regulation of mood. A well-designed bedroom can significantly impact that. 

Feng Shui emphasizes the positioning of your bed, the choice of colors, and the elimination of clutter. This is supposed to promote relaxation, sound sleep, and emotional balance. Psychologically, this has been proven to alleviate stress, anxiety, and restlessness, resulting in a better quality sleep.

On average, a person spends about one-third of their life asleep. This means that if you lived to be 75 years old, you would have spent roughly 25 years sleeping.

Despite the substantial amount of time spent asleep, the importance of quality sleep cannot be overstated, as it directly impacts various aspects of physical, mental, and emotional well-being. Prioritizing good sleep habits and addressing sleep-related issues can contribute to a healthier and more fulfilling life.

The command position for a bed is generally understood to be a location that provides a clear view of the entrance door while being diagonally opposite to it. This can contribute to reduced anxiety and enhanced feelings of comfort and relaxation. A study published in the journal “Environment and Behavior” in 2003 by Vartanian, et al., suggested that feelings of control over the environment can lead to positive emotional states and greater satisfaction with the living space.

Start by decluttering your bedroom. Remove unnecessary items, organize your belongings, and create a clean slate. Additionally, open windows to let in fresh air and light, and consider using natural scents like lavender or eucalyptus to purify the air.

Step 2: Position Your Bed

Place your bed in the “command position,” which allows you to see the bedroom door without being directly in line with it. This arrangement signifies a sense of safety and control in your space. Moreover, sleeping directly in line with the door might lead to a subconscious feeling of vulnerability, potentially disrupting your sleep.

Step 3: Solid Wall Support

A wooden headboard or furniture represents wood, candles or lighting symbolize fire, earth can be represented by pottery or ceramics, metal can be introduced through metal-framed mirrors, and a small indoor fountain can bring in the water element.

Electronics emit electromagnetic fields that can disrupt sleep in your bedroom. If possible, keep TVs, computers, and other electronic devices out of the bedroom. If you must have them, make sure they’re turned off or unplugged before sleep.

Numerous studies have demonstrated the negative impact of electronic devices, such as smartphones, tablets, and computers, on sleep quality. The blue light emitted by these devices interferes with the body’s production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep-wake cycles. Exposure to blue light before bedtime suppresses melatonin production, making it harder to fall asleep and disrupting the natural circadian rhythm. 

Additionally, the stimulating content and notifications from electronic devices can trigger your mind, increasing alertness and delaying the onset of sleep. 

Step 9: Reflective Surfaces and Mirrors

Avoid having mirrors facing the bed, and if at all possible, out of the room entirely.

Mirrors can be strategically placed to expand space and reflect light. However, avoid placing them in a way that reflects the bed, as this can create unsettling energy during sleep.

From a scientific perspective, mirrors can create a sense of unease when positioned in a way that reflects movement without an obvious source, potentially triggering the brain’s fight-or-flight response.

Moreover, some studies in environmental psychology suggest that the presence of mirrors in the bedroom can contribute to increased self-consciousness and stress, as individuals are constantly aware of their appearance even during moments of relaxation. 

There Are A Few Things To Avoid

The practice of Feng Shui has some “do nots” when arranging your bedroom into the ideal space. While there is no direct, measurable validation regarding the “negative” or “bad effects” of the following , there is a psychological aspect to it. Generally speaking, it’s been shown to create a sense of uneasiness, even discomfort.

Should your bedroom be constructed in such a way where some of these “do nots” are unavoidable, then make the best of it.

Remember, Feng Shui is a set of guiding principles that have a strong, positive psychological foundation, but it’s not something that reverses your life and ruins you. 

In the worst case, your bedroom, debatably, won’t benefit as much from Feng Shui principles the way other rooms do.

Steer Clear of Heavy Beams and Angled or Sloped Ceilings

Placing your bed under an angled or sloped ceiling can create an uneven and imbalanced energy flow. Heavy beams above the bed can create a sense of pressure and imbalance, potentially affecting your well-being. It may also create a psychological feeling of pressure or instability above you while you sleep.

Avoid Pushing The Bed Against A Wall On One Side

Try to avoid placing the bed directly against a wall on one side.

Positioning the bed against a wall on one side can create an imbalance in the room’s energy flow. It’s best to have equal space on both sides of the bed to promote harmony and stability. Psychologically, a bed with two sides to get out creates a sense of freedom and openness. 

Don’t Overwhelm with Excessive Decorations

Try to keep the bedroom decoration limited and simple.

While incorporating personal items is encouraged, avoid overwhelming the bedroom with excessive decorations. A cluttered and busy environment can hinder the free flow of energy and create a chaotic atmosphere. It also creates a sense of restriction and tends to impede thinking.

Refrain from using artwork, decor, or items with negative or unsettling symbolism. Your bedroom should be a sanctuary of positivity and relaxation, so choose items that promote positive emotions and well-being. Dark or aggressive images, artwork, and objects can create subconscious disturbances and even plant seeds of fear.

As many enter their 40s, the bedroom serves as a sanctuary for relaxation and rejuvenation, offering a retreat from the stresses of daily life. It’s a place where one can unwind, recharge, and focus on self-care. Adequate sleep and restful nights become critical for maintaining physical and mental health.

One of the key benefits of a bedroom designed with Feng Shui principles is the potential improvement in the quality of sleep. An atmosphere conducive to relaxation and serenity is created, which in turn positively impacts sleep patterns. This leads to a more restful and rejuvenating night. 

After the age of 40, quality sleep is more important than before. Considering the body alone is managing itself differently, good sleep supports the body’s natural repair and maintenance processes. This naturally leads to better physical health. 

Additionally, a more serene bedroom not only improves sleep and rest for bodily repairs, it also is closely linked to cognitive function, memory consolidation, and emotional health. This can notably improve mental activity and even allow for greater problem-solving and creativity.
