According to the Handbook of Clinical Neurology, we consume approximately 1/3rd of our lives sleeping. This means roughly 33% of our life is in the bedroom, if not more. 

The average person sleeps approximately 220,000 hours their entire lifetime and, as per a survey Glamour Magazine cites, the average person also has sex about 30,000 times their entire life. (The survey may include foreplay as well as intercourse.)

Dr. Darren Lipnicki wrote a research paper that found more people do more creative thinking while lying on their backs. This reveals that thoughts and ideas related to innovation have a higher likelihood of happening in the bedroom.

Conditions that allow recovery from the day’s events, demands, and stresses, are extremely important. The less interference there is during that restoration, the better. As most people spend a massive amount of their time in the bedroom, it becomes clear that it’s an ideal place for returning to optimum health.

We tend to prioritize work, social commitments, and entertainment over a good night’s sleep. However, mounting scientific evidence highlights the crucial role that sleep plays in our overall health and well-being. Numerous studies have shown that sleep is closely linked to cognitive function, including memory, learning, attention, and problem-solving skills.  

One study revealed that new memories are significantly affected by sleep, including the quality and consistency of slumber. 

Sleep has also been deeply related to creative thinking, as briefly described above, including complex problem-solving

Lastly, but equally important, is that proper rest has been closely linked to physical health. Appetites are affected, which has been shown to lead to weight gain. Sleep deficiency is also known to cause many chronic health problems, such as heart and kidney disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Having a better, well-laid-out bedroom can influence your overall well-being and indirectly affect your relationships in several ways.

A well-designed bedroom can promote relaxation and better sleep quality, which in turn can improve your mood, reduce stress levels, and enhance your overall well-being. When you feel well-rested and rejuvenated, you are more likely to engage in healthy communication, empathy, and intimacy, which are essential for fulfilling relationships.

A comfortable and inviting bedroom can create a conducive atmosphere for intimacy and romance. A clutter-free and well-organized bedroom can promote a sense of serenity and calm. This, in turn, can help you approach your relationships with a clearer mind, allowing you to be more present and attentive to your partner’s needs.

The article, Insomnia, published by Psychology Today, explains how the lack of sleep affects nearly everything, including the increase of depression and other aspects of mental health.

Poor sleep, over a long enough time, has been shown to increase psychiatric disorders like bipolar personality, schizophrenia, and anxiety. 

In contrast, the bedroom provides a place for emotional release and self-reflection. Having a space for self-reflection is essential for personal growth and emotional health. Within the privacy of our bedrooms, we can freely express and process our emotions, allowing for introspection, healing, and personal development.

Incorporating elements of relaxation and mindfulness within the bedroom environment can significantly reduce stress and promote psychological well-being. 

A Bad Bedroom Can Interfere With Decision Making, Which Can Result In Financial Loss

To be clear, it’s not JUST the bedroom alone that can lead to financial loss or poverty over al long enough period of time. However, as written in a previous post, surroundings that inhibit your development or recovery can contribute significantly to your existing problems. 

The lack of proper sleep is an excellent and obvious example, as described in the previous sections. Here is how it can affect everyday life.

Reduced Job Performance 

Bad sleep can impair cognitive function, decrease productivity, and increase the likelihood of errors. When job performance suffers, it can lead to missed opportunities, lower performance evaluations, and reduced chances of promotion or salary increases. Employers may be less likely to recognize and reward those who consistently underperform due to sleep-related issues.

Missed Work or Tardiness

Regularly missing work or arriving late due to sleep-related issues can lead to a loss of income through reduced pay, less overtime or bonuses, or possible disciplinary actions. This can also harm your reputation and perceived reliability in the workplace.

One of the best ways to get the most out of your bedroom is to follow some basic, Feng Shui related principles. 

1. Declutter

Feng Shui emphasizes the importance of decluttering your space to allow positive energy, or Chi, to flow freely. While there may be no scientific evidence to support “Chi”, there are studies that prove the positive effects of decluttering. A clutter-free environment promotes a calm and tranquil atmosphere, conducive to quality sleep and relaxation.

2. Position Your Bed Like A King / Queen

The bed is the focal point of any bedroom, and its placement plays a vital role in promoting a sense of harmony. Ideally, place your bed against a solid wall, ensuring strong and stable support. Avoid positioning the bed directly in line with the door, but, if possible, position the bed in a way that allows you to see the entrance.

Think of your bed like that of a King or Queen.

Every room royalty is present for long periods, he or she will remain in such a way so that no one can approach them unannounced. The original idea was to limit the chances of assassination and sneak attacks. Psychologically, the King / Queen position creates a subconscious comfort and assurance, resulting in a more relaxed confidence and rest.

3. Balancing the Five Elements

In Feng Shui, the five elements (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water) are fundamental components that represent different energies. Psychologically, colors have been known to influence behaviors and moods. Check out a previous post for more information. 

Here’s a way you can integrate them.

Wood

Introduce wooden furniture or elements to represent growth and vitality. You can add a small indoor plant or incorporate wooden accents, such as a bedside table or a headboard.

Fire

This adds warmth and passion with lighting and decor. Soft, warm lighting creates a cozy atmosphere, while candles or a fireplace (if feasible) can enhance intimacy and promote relaxation.

Earth

Utilize earthy tones and textures like beige, brown, or terracotta through bedding, rugs, or wall colors, which can provide stability and a sense of security.

Metal

Represented by metal objects, this element promotes clarity and precision. Accents, such as picture frames, lamps with metal bases, small trays or metal sculptures are ways to implement this.

Water

A small tabletop fountain or an aquarium can create a soothing ambiance. However, be mindful of not placing water elements directly in the bedroom, as it may disrupt sleep.

A little bit of water related artwork works as well.

Romantic Hues

Shades of pink, peach, and mauve create a sense of romance and intimacy, fostering deeper connections.

Energizing Tones

Warm colors like red, orange, and yellow can be used sparingly to add energy and passion. Use them as accents rather than dominating the space.

5. If Possible, Get Rid Of Your Electronics

Tv, video games and more in the bedroom should be removed if possible.

The presence of electronics in the bedroom can significantly disrupt sleep patterns. The blue light emitted by screens, such as smartphones and tablets, suppresses the production of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep.

Constant exposure to notifications, emails, and social media updates can lead to heightened levels of stress and anxiety. When we bring our electronics into the bedroom, we bring the stressors of the outside world with us, making it difficult to unwind and relax. By disconnecting from technology in the bedroom, we create a tranquil space that promotes relaxation and helps us alleviate stress and anxiety.

Setting boundaries and designating the bedroom as an electronics-free space, we regain control and foster a healthier relationship with our devices.

For People Who Are 40 Years And Older, The Bedroom Is Even More Important

According to a working paper published at the National Bureau of Economic Research, a significant number of people are unhappy around the age of 40 years old. 

Healthline posted an article that references a study where people over 40 are sleeping far less, and worse, than those younger. 

Chemical and hormonal changes taking place in our bodies, evolving social and work circumstances adding stress, including the psychological phenomenon known as a midlife crisis, proper recovery is an absolute must. 

A serene bedroom that promotes a healthy, restful sleep and peaceful environment is the simplest, yet most effective way to counter the challenges that come with being 40.
